The Center of Multi-Dimensional Carbon Materials of Institute of Basic Science (IBS-CMCM), located in Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) of Korea, is launching a theory research group led by Prof. Feng Ding (see
http://www.researcherid.com/rid/D-5938-2011 for more information).
Number of Scholarships:
The theory group now has 5-6 PhD student openings.
Study Area:
i. Multi-scale computational methods development for materials science, including global minimum and/or transition state searching, classical and semi-empirical potential energy surfaces, kinetic Monte Carlo algorithms, Phase Field Theory, etc.
ii. Application of machine learning in materials science, including the development of artificial neural network (ANN) potential and material prediction by machine leaning, etc.
iii. The mechanism nanomaterials’ synthesis at atomic level, including (i) the formation mechanism of fullerenes from vapor phases; (ii) the mechanisms of carbon nanotube (CNT) growth and the potential routes towards chirality selection during CNTs synthesis; (iii) the mechanism of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of graphene and other 2D materials; (iv) the mechanism of diamond CVD growth, etc.
iv. The structural defects, mechanical, thermal, electronic properties of CNTs, graphene and 2D materials.
v. The computational study of surface science and chemical reactions in solution.
Requirements:
The PhD positions are open to those who are holding or will be awarded a Bachelor or Master Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, etc.
What does it cover:
All tuition fees will be waived for successful applicants, and sufficient allowances for living and study in UNIST will be provided.
