The position is within Informatics, with a specialization in critical infrastructure protection at the University of Skövde (Sweden). Informatics is defined as the science that addresses how information is represented, processed and communicated in artificial and natural systems, and how such systems are used and developed in order to achieve usable and effective applications and solutions for individuals, organizations or society. The position is supported by an EU ISF (Internal Security Fund) project: “threat modeling and resilience of critical infrastructure”. The position comprises PhD studies (at least 80%) and departmental duties (teaching and administrative tasks, at most 20%). 

The PhD work will contribute to a project at the forefront of distributed real-time systems. The project engages research in systems modelling, graph theory, computational logic and stochastic processes. Qualification requirements

1. The applicant must hold a Master degree in Computer Science, or an advanced level degree or coursework equal to at least 240 ECTS credits where a minimum of 60 ECTS credits are on the advanced level, or knowledge equivalent to these levels of university study 

2. At least 60 ECTS credits of documented study within informatics, computer science or other potentially relevant subject areas. At least 15 ECTS credits of the 60 ECTS credits should comprise a final year project on an advanced level

3. The candidate should have strong analytical (mathematical) skills and strong system implementation skills and must be fluent in English (written and spoken).


Benefits

The position is a temporary employment until PhD degree, but no longer than 5 years. The position has an attractive salary and social benefits. A PhD student position is available at the Networking Research Laboratory,
Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ, for a
self-motivated  and committed candidate. The PhD student is expected to
perform research on computer networking, power systems, Internet of Things,
and smart grid.

A candidate must have BS and MS degrees in electrical/computer engineering,
or similar field, with strong background in power systems and computer
networking by the time studies start. The candidate must have excellent
English communication and writing skills, and high GRE scores. Publication
record is a plus.

The Institute of Information Systems at the Technische Universität Wien (TU
Wien), Distributed Systems Group, is offering a pre-doc university assistant
position (25 hours/week) for four years. The estimated starting date is June
1, 2017.
Entry level salary as a pre-doc researcher (25 hours/week) is covered by
level B1 of the Austrian Collective Agreement for university staff with a
minimum salary of currently EUR 1.706,90 EUR/month gross, 14 times/year. 
It is possible to increase to 40 hours/week with payment through project
activities.

Qualification:
A good diploma or master university degree in computer science, informatics,
business informatics, or a related discipline.

Associate Professor Position in Affective and Social Computing at Telecom-ParisTech, France

The group dedicated to Research in Machine-Learning, Statistics & Signal Processing (the S2A research group), within the Image, Data & Signal department (the IDS Dpt.) and the Laboratoire Traitement et Communication de l'Information (LTCI) is recruiting an Associate Professor in Affective and Social Computing.

Research

•        The applicant should have strong expertise in one or several of the following topics: human-agent interaction, human-machine dialogue, generation of agents’ socio-emotional behaviors, as well as social signal processing and natural language processing. It involves the development of novel machine learning methods including deep learning, transfer learning, reinforcement learning.
•        The recruit is expected to contribute to scientific projects with national and international laboratories and industrial partners. This may be done by participating to proposals to national and international research project calls, industrial chair programs, bilateral contracts, or by co-supervising PhD theses (including CIFRE theses, involving industrial partners).
•        The research activities will rely on the expertise of the S2A research group concerning machine learning, audio processing, natural language processing and social and affective computing.
•        Research results will be published in leading journals and conferences. Activities in scientific bodies, organization of special sessions, workshops as well as involvement in committees of scientific conferences will be expected.

Teaching

The recruit is expected to teach mostly in the field of Machine-learning at the bachelor or master levels, including courses in the masters of the University Paris-Saclay. Part of teaching will also be in a professional master of Telecom ParisTech fully dedicated to Big Data (“Management and Analysis of Big Data”) and in a «  Data Scientist  » certificate.

Skills

•        Education  : PhD or equivalent
•        An international postdoctoral experience is welcome but not mandatory
•        English: fluent; French: good or the candidate should be willing to improve it

Knowledge and experience required

•                Research publications in Affective and Social Computing, human-machine interactions, opinion mining or virtual agents.
•        Teaching skills in machine learning
•        Research and teaching experience in deep learning will be appreciated

Deadline: June 1, 2017 The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program, subject to the availability of funding.
Deadline: June 1, 2017
The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study, teach, and pursue research in the U.S.
To be eligible, applicants must:
  • Have a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;
  • Have completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;
  • Be proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL, or 88 on internet based TOEFL, or 7.0 on IELTS);
  • Demonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;
  • Be in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and
  • Not have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.
Fulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States, as well as tuition fees, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. Grant provisions do not include financial support for dependents.

Application Instructions

Applicants who do not already have a minimum TOEFL score of 570 or equivalent should plan to take a proficiency test prior to the application deadline. Proof of English proficiency must accompany the complete application form. Applicants will be deemed ineligible without providing evidence of English proficiency.
All costs associated with English language tests are borne by the applicants themselves.
Students receiving a 570 or above on the TOEFL ITP or equivalent are invited to apply for the Fulbright program online. The application is available here. United Nations University PhD Internship Program (Fully funded)

PhD Internship

Our PhD Internship Programme gives registered doctoral students an opportunity to utilize the resources and facilities at UNU-WIDER for their PhD dissertation or thesis research, and to work with UNU-WIDER researchers in areas of mutual interest. Deadline for applications is 31 March 23:59 UTC+3.

PhD interns typically spend 3 consecutive months at UNU-WIDER and are expected to return to their home institution afterwards. During their time in Helsinki, PhD interns prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their research findings. PhD interns may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series. Read about previous intern experiences here.

Selection criteria

Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme and have shown ability to conduct research on developing economies. Candidates working in other social sciences may apply but should keep in mind that UNU-WIDER is an economics-focused institute. Candidates should be fluent in oral and written English and possess good quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills. Preference is given to applicants who are living or working in developing countries and who are at later stages of the PhD.

Financial assistance

UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant to cover the costs of travel to and from the location of your PhD granting institution, medical insurance (for medical and hospital services resulting from sickness and accident during your stay at UNU-WIDER), and a monthly stipend of EUR 1,600 to cover living expenses in Helsinki during the period of their internship. The programme does not cover expenses related to dependents.

Application procedure

UNU-WIDER only receives online applications for the PhD Internship Programme twice each year. Deadlines for submission of applications are 31 March and 30 September 23:59 UTC+3 each year. When applying in September, you would be visiting UNU-WIDER in the period February-June of the following year and when applying in March, you would be visiting UNU-WIDER in the period August-November of the same year.
Please note that the link to the online application form will only become active one month prior to the submission deadline (e.g., application procedures start on 1 March and 1 September of each year).
Selected applicants will be informed by email of the final decision within four weeks of the closing deadline. The selected applicants must confirm their decision to take up UNU-WIDER's offer two weeks after being contacted.

As part of your application, you will be asked to upload your curriculum vitae. Lumen Research is an ambitious London-based ad tech start up, specialising in the application of eye-tracking technology to market research.  Founded in 2013 Lumen has grown fast in its first three years and is seeking to expand its team further.  Using state of the art eye-tracking sensors we examine how successfully our clients’ communications engage consumers’ attention and help them find ways to communicate more effectively.  We provide behavioural research on the effectiveness of visual communications (including online/paper advertising, direct marketing, in-store, bills, etc.) for some of the UK’s best-known brands.  Our business is built on a consulting base that has already reformed how brands measure, plan and execute marketing communications.  It is transforming to a real-time ad tech business by creating scalable software products for online advertising that will revolutionise how demand side platform bids in ad exchanges for ad spaces.
University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and Lumen Research are offering an exciting opportunity to a post graduate in Computer Science/Software Engineering/Information Technology or with a relevant degree involving a significant amount of software development to support Lumen Research.  The post is a 30-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project between the company and UWS, and has the potential for permanent employment.
The successful candidate will be a trusted member of the research and development team and will be expected, with support from a highly cooperative community of academic experts, to lead change within the company through enhancement in the international marketing potential, effective service delivery and up-selling capability of the organisation via innovative, technology-driven, service-oriented collaboration with key business partners.  Additional academic support will be provided by a close community of industry-focused inter-disciplinary research groups and the successful applicant should exhibit entrepreneurial flair, and proactively communicate with researchers throughout the University.
Interested candidates should be committed to achieving the desired change in the company and have at least a post graduate degree or with a relevant degree involving a significant amount of software development.  The successful applicant will have a sound knowledge of programming language C/C++/Python.  Experience of test-driven development, agile software development, or technical writing is desirable.  Familiarity with the following technologies would also be a significant advantage: Neural network, deep learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data.
