Who is an International Applicant?

Foreign national whose parents must have foreign citizenship.

What is it about?

The Government of the People's Republic of China has placed at the disposal of UNESCO for the academic year 2016-2017, under the co-sponsorship of UNESCO, seventy-five (75) fellowships for advanced studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These fellowships are for the benefit of developing Member States in Africa, Asia–Pacific, Latin America, Europe and North America and Arab region.

The fellowships, tenable at a selected number of Chinese universities, are for a duration of one year. These fellowships, are in most cases to be conducted in English. In exceptional cases, candidates may be required to study Chinese language before taking up research/study in their fields of interest.

TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences [biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics] (Consortia)

The TWAS Research Grants Program in Basic Sciences was established in response to the needs of researchers in developing countries, particularly those attached to institutions that lack appropriate research facilities. Under this scheme, grants can be awarded for research projects in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics either to individual young researchers or to research units in the 81 science-and-technology-lagging countries (S&TLC) identified by TWAS, to enable them to purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity.

The information on this page refers to proposals submitted by research consortia. The TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences aims to:

Reinforce and promote scientific research in basic sciences in developing countries;
Strengthen developing countries' endogenous capacity in science;
Reduce the exodus of scientific talents from the South;
Build and sustain units of scientific excellence in the 81 S&T-lagging countries identified by TWAS over a longer period to help them achieve a critical mass of highly qualified and innovative scientists capable of addressing real-life problems facing their countries.

The TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences complements that of the International Foundation for Science (IFS). The two organizations maintain close contact to ensure the complementarity of the two schemes and to avoid duplication. The TWAS Research Grants Programme supports research in the basic sciences only; proposals focusing on more applied research should therefore be submitted to IFS. TWAS cannot accept projects relating to applications in agriculture or medicine or that use existing techniques to screen, for example, medicinal plants for bioactive substances or to monitor an environment for pollutants; TWAS will have to reject such proposals.

The programme is generously supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and theItalian government. The Sida contribution is mainly intended to support research proposals from S&TLCs in dire need of basic research tools.

Program Details

TWAS Research Grants are awarded to high-level promising research projects in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics carried out by research consortia (formed by one or two collaborating groups to work on a common problem and possibly located within the same country or region) in the 81 S&T-lagging countries identified by TWAS.
Research Grants to research consortia amount to a maximum of USD 20,000.
The grants, which are normally provided for a period of 18 months, may be used to purchase scientific equipment, consumables and specialized literature (textbooks and proceedings only). They do not cover salaries of researchers and/or students, field expenses, or travel expenses. In addition, the purchase of laptops and laboratory animals is not supported.
Awarded research consortia will also be able to support an MSc student as part of the project (full details will be provided to successful candidates).

Eligibility

Applying research consortia must be led by a principle investigator (PI) who is a national of a developing country, who holds a PhD and who has good research experience. (Note: The PI will be responsible for the coordination of the research, submission of requested documentation, management of the funds and reporting of the expenses. All TWAS correspondence will be with this ‘consortium PI’).
Each member of the consortium should operate in a university or research institution in one of the 81 S&T-lagging countries and should also be represented in the proposal by a PI. No age limit is applied to the consortia PIs.
Applications from women scientists and those working in Least Developed Countries are especially encouraged.
Individual young scientists or leaders of research units currently holding a TWAS Research Grant in the Basic Sciences are not eligible.

Agreement

On selection by an expert committee and approval by the TWAS executive director, a written agreement is made between TWAS, the grantee (‘consortium PI’) and his/her institute, plus the other members of the consortium. The consortium institutes undertake to administer the grant according to the agreement and to provide laboratory space, salaries and other facilities necessary for the project. Equipment, consumables and literature provided for the project through the TWAS Research Grants Programme remain the property of the relevant institute after the project is completed. Items may be dispatched to any of the participating institutions.
In general, the grant funds are kept at TWAS for the purchase of items requested by the grant holder. TWAS places the orders with the supplier(s) upon receipt of proforma invoices submitted by the grant holder in accordance with the approved itemized budget.
The agreement will also provide details on how to activate other benefits of the grant such as support for travel for young scientists to attend international scientific meetings, and support for publishing in Open Access journals.
Grant holders must submit a final report within one year from the date of the last purchase.

Summer Fellowship Programme for Undergraduate Students in Spain, 2016

General description

ICIQ Summer Fellowship programme offers 10 fellowships to national and international undergraduate students to give them the opportunity to learn, work and live in an exciting environment of cutting-edge research in chemistry.

The undergraduates, mentored and supervised by a PhD student or a postdoctoral researcher, will carry out research projects with scientists at the forefront of their fields in addition to receiving training. During their stay, students will have access to ICIQ seminars and conferences. By the end of their internship Summer fellows will be required to present a short report and presentation of the work and results obtained.

This is a great opportunity for undergraduates to have an insight on the Institute research activities and to conduct research in an international scientific environment. Moreover, summer fellows are in an optimal situation to carry out Master studies at ICIQ and then apply for a future PhD position in our institute.

Requirements

The ICIQ Summer Fellowships programme is addressed to undergraduate students with a background in Chemistry or related studies.

Interested candidates should be preferably in the last year (or having accomplished 180 credits) of their undergraduate studies.

It will be highly appreciated if the candidates state their willing to carry out master studies at ICIQ.

*Important note: Please take into account that depending on your nationality, you’ll be required to get a student visa. So if you’re awarded with one of our summer fellowships, please make sure you’ll have your visa ready before the beginning of the programme on the first week of July.

Conditions

ICIQ Summer Fellows will receive a total stipend of € 2,000 for the period of 3 months. If any of the fellows’ stay is less than 3 months, the student will receive an amount proportional to their time spent at ICIQ .

Summer Fellows will receive a maximum of € 500 (upon presentation of receipts) for travel to and from their place of origin.

ICIQ will provide medical insurance in the event of accident or illness during the internship.

Selection process

Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by an internal committee. By the end of May we will contact all candidates to let them know whether they have been awarded with one of ICIQ’s Summer fellowships. After acceptance by all successful candidates, a final list of the awardees will be available in ICIQ’s website.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships – information for candidates

Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s and PhD study in the UK are offered for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.
Students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK can apply for Commonwealth Shared Scholarships for Master’s study, jointly supported by UK universities.
Purpose: To contribute to development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals and academics who would not otherwise have been able to study in the UK.
Intended beneficiaries: High-quality postgraduate students who have not studied extensively overseas before, who would not otherwise have the opportunity to study in the UK, and who have the potential to enhance the development of their home countries with the knowledge and leadership skills they acquire.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are offered for selected taught Master’s courses, and are usually tenable for one year only. These scholarships do not cover undergraduate courses, PhD study, or any pre-sessional English language teaching.

Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person
Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2016
By August 2016, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard
Not have studied or worked for one (academic) year or more in a developed country
Be unable, either yourself or through your family, to pay to study in the UK

Selection process

Each participating UK university will conduct its own recruitment process to select a specified number of candidates for Shared Scholarships. Universities must put forward their selected candidates to the CSC by 29 April 2016. The CSC will then confirm that these candidates meet the eligibility criteria for this scheme. Universities will inform candidates of their results by July 2016.
Selection criteria include:

Academic merit of the candidate
Potential impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country.

How to apply

You should apply to study an eligible Master’s course at a UK university that is participating in the Shared Scholarship scheme. Click here for a list of participating universities and eligible courses

You can apply for more than one course and/or to more than one university, but you may only accept one offer of a Shared Scholarship. The CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via the EAS to your UK university or applications directly from individuals.
All applications must be submitted by 23.59 (BST) on 1 April 2016 at the latest. Each university has its own closing date for applications, and most fall before 1 April 2016. You must submit your application by the date advised by your UK university.
