We are looking for motivated students who have strong interest in the area of data science and machine learning for human-centered applications, including recommender systems and learning analytics.

Preferable Background:
The selected candidates should demonstrate strong interests and relevant training/skills including:
* Completed B.S./M.S. degree(s) in one of the related disciplines: Computer Science/Engineering, Information Sciences, Mathematics, Applied Statistics.
* Excellent writing and spoken English skills
* Experience with computational environments (R, Matlab); programming skills in scripting languages (Python, Perl, Javascript, etc.) and/or in major languages (Java, C, C++); previous coursework and/or practical experience in machine learning

Admitted students will be enrolled in the doctoral program in the Department of Computer Science at University at Albany - SUNY, and will work with Prof. Shaghayegh (Sherry) Sahebi on developing innovative methods in: Data Mining and Data Analytics, Machine Learning for User-Adaptive Systems, Learning Analytics, Recommender Systems, Social Network Analysis, and other related topics.

TWAS, "Sustainability Case Studies” Competition (Green and Sustainable Chemistry, Energy, Agriculture & Food Security, Water & Sanitation, Climate Change & Disaster).



The competition is designed as a catalyst to boost the involvement of young researchers from developing countries in sustainability science as a whole. Through their case studies, early career researchers will consider how their research helps to tackle some of our greatest challenges.


The Competition calls for case studies which present issues and challenges for sustainable development through real life situations. Submissions should:
  • identify the roots and causes of the problem placing it into its social, national and/or international context.
  • make reference to the impact of the current situation
  • outline on-going or possible solution(s) explicitly specifying the role of science and/or policy making
Finally, case studies should remain focused on key principles such as sustainable future, ecosystem services and quality of life for human societies.
The Elsevier Foundation and TWAS are pleased to announce the launch of the first “Sustainability Case Studies” Contest; the call will open on the 1st of December 2016 and will close on the 1st of February 2017. Full guidelines are provided below.
Guidelines:
  • The “Sustainability Case Studies” Contest is open to all current TWAS and OWSD PhD Fellowship recipients.
  • Only one submission per person is permitted.
  • Write-ups will be accepted on one of the 6 sustainability topics listed below:
    • Green and Sustainable Chemistry
    • Energy
    • Agriculture and Food Security
    • Water and Sanitation
    • Science Education and the Workforce
    • Climate Change and Disaster & Risk Reduction
  • Special consideration will be given to case studies which feature how a gender dimension has been applied to their area of research.
  • Case studies should not exceed 500 words.
  • Papers should be written in English for an educated lay audience.
  • Each submission will include i) the electronic entry form duly filled in, and an ii) essay written in English and saved in MS WORD DOC.
  • Only one submission per person is permitted.
  • The best essay in each of the 6 categories will be rewarded with a prize of 1,000 USD.
  • Evaluation of essays will take place in March 2017 and will be carried out by a panel of judges. Winners will be announced before May 2017.
  • Complete submissions should be received by email to exchanges@twas.org before and no later than the 1st of February 2017.

Please follow the guidelines below.
  • Technical termsPlease explain technical terms so that non-scientists can understand (the target readership will include policy-makers, NGOs, etc.).
  • AcronymsThese should be spelled out in the first instance followed by the acronym in brackets, e.g. The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
  • Monetary valuesPlease provide all figures in US Dollars or Euros.
  • PublicationsPlease ensure that the references given are accurate and select those that are more readily accessible.
  • ImagesPlease ensure that photographs are of a suitable size (Jpeg files with an image size of 10 x 15 cm and a resolution of 300 dpi are adequate) and that text (in English) and symbols on charts and diagrams will be legible when reduced to fit across a page measuring 16 cm.

CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Programme for PhD, 2016-2017. last date 31 March, 2017




How to Apply?

1. What needs to be done by you, your supervisor and your referees?
a. Before beginning an application, YOU are required to read the “Call for Applications“ and this Instruction carefully. You should find a supervisor in your interested research field and contact him/her. You should show the supervisor evidence of your academic ability and research expertise, e.g. CV, research proposal, degrees, transcripts etc. to convince your supervisor of your academic competence. Then YOU are required to complete your application online (submit the application form and upload supporting documentations onto the system) and email all supporting documentations (please refer to “Printed Document Checklist” to the host supervisor). You are also responsible for contacting your supervisor and referees to ensure that they have done their work to help complete your application.
b. SUPERVISORS shall
1) Check the academic background of the applicant, including reviewing his/her relevant documents and conducting tele-interviews. Complete the Supervisor’s Comment Page, print it out, get it stamped, scanned and upload the scanned copy online as an important document.
2) Print out the “Application Form for CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Programme” of the applicant sent by the online application system
3) Print out all supporting documentations emailed by the applicant.
4) Send the hard copy of all the above documents (1-3) to the CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Sub-Office in UCAS/USTC.
c. REFEREES shall upload the scanned copies of their reference letters online and send the original copies to the Sub-Office in UCAS/USTC directly.
2. Before filing your online application
Download the following forms, complete and scan them for subsequent upload.

You need to choose the Form of the university you are applying for.
b. Foreigner Physical Examination Form   foreigner physical examination form.pdf
You need to provide authentic medical information about your health.
3. File your online application.
The online application includes the application form and supporting documentations. please submit the application form as early as possible so as to leave enough time for your supervisor and referees to provide their comments and references.
a. Create your online application ID with a valid email account and input a password of your own. You will receive a confirmation email with a link and a reference number. Click the link to activate your ID. The reference number should be indicated at enquiries concerning your application AT ALL TIMES .
b. The online application can be accessed and edited as many times as you would like before 31, March, 2016. Be sure to save your application by clicking “Save Your Application” at the bottom left-hand corner of the webpage each time before signing out.
c. You can view your information in a PDF document by clicking “View Your Application” at the bottom right-hand corner of the webpage. Some of your info does not appear in the PDF document but is stored in our database.
d. Submit your application form by clicking “Submit and Download” upon completion. Note that once submitted, your information CANNOT be changed.
The system will generate the “Application Form for CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship Programme” based on the information you provided, and email it to your supervisor according to their email address you provided. You can save the form for further reference.
4. Upload Supporting Documentations
The Supporting Documentations shall be uploaded after submitting your application. The absence of any of them will disqualify your application. Please make sure your documents meet the requirements for upload.

5. Track Your Application
Click “Track Your Application” in the Quick Links to check your application status.

NOTE: If your application gets returned …
Should your application get returned for further improvement, during which you change the email address of your supervisor or referees, a new message would be sent to them to require the Supervisor’s Comment Page or the reference letter.
Otherwise, if the email addresses of your supervisor or referees remain unchanged, despite major changes you have made in your application form, no message will be prompted to your supervisor or referees during your process of improvement. You may contact them directly to inform them of the changes you have made in your application.

Bachelor’s or master’s Scholarships in Holland for international students in the field of applied sciences.



The Holland Scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as well as several Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. This scholarship is meant for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to do their bachelor’s or master’s in the Netherlands.

Scholarship

The scholarship amounts to € 5,000. You will receive this in the first year of your studies. Please note that this is not a full-tuition scholarship.

Grant award period

The grant is awarded for one year and can only be received once.

Application criteria

  • Your nationality is non-EEA.
  • You are applying for a full-time bachelor’s or master’s programme at one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions. 
  • You meet the specific requirements of the institution of your choice. You can find these on the website of the institution.
  • You do not have a degree from an education institution in the Netherlands.

How to apply

Applications for the 2017-2018 academic year are now open. The deadline for application is either 1 February 2017 or 1 May 2017. Please check your specific deadline on the website of the institution you want to apply to.
