Postdoctoral position in Computing Science, Database Systems, Umeå University, Sweeden

Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

The Department of Computing Science, Umeå University  (http://www.cs.umu.se/english/) is seeking outstanding candidates for one postdoctoral researcher position within the field of database system, especially on heterogeneous database integration and management. We are looking for a skillful researcher, who is able to contribute to our research environment through independent and innovative research, cooperate with other researchers, assist in the supervision of PhD students. The successful candidate will join a recently funded project at Umeå University on academic federated database construction and privacy preservation in federated databases.

Application submission deadline is March 31, 2016.
Project descriptionThis project is focusing on creating an infrastructure for federated research databases by integrating major research databases at the university, like e.g. the Demographic data base, MONICA, VHU, and a number of national databases. A long term goal is to offer federation of databases at national as well as at international level. This initiative is in line with the investigation that the Swedish government recently initiated, where Umeå University is mentioned as a core partner in the anticipated technology development in this area.
The federated database would be an integration of individual databases, which may be large, distributed, heterogeneous, and autonomous. During the construction and integrating process, it is of interest to explore academic and practical research topics, such as database records resolution, and privacy preservation. The processed individual databases often contain sensitive personal information and data. This implies that the result of cross-database analyses should not be, or may not be stored without being de-personalized. The research is expected to include development of both theory and methodologies that are highly relevant for a federated database infrastructure, with research regarding integrity and security in database systems as the most important focus. Technology used will include database technology, data mining, and privacy preservation.
The appointment is for two years full time, expected to start from June 1, 2016, or as otherwise agreed.
Qualifications
The applicant must have a PhD degree in computer science or another subject relevant for the project. In particular, the applicant must have a background in the area of data systems, especially on heterogeneous database integration and management. The PhD degree shall not be more than three years old by the end of the application period unless there are special reasons. Good research merits and excellent publications in the area of the position are strongly meriting. Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English are required.
In the selection of candidates, attention is paid to both academic and practical skills. Particular emphasis will be put on the degree of academic experiences, practical skills and interest in the following areas:
  • Research and practical experiences on database system is essential, especially on distributed, autonomous, heterogeneous databases integration, federated database deployment and management (e.g., query, concurrency control). Experience on privacy preservation on federated databases, data mining, and relevant topics would be a plus.
  • Programming proficiency on at least one objective language and one script language (e.g., Java/Matlab/Python/Perl/C/C++)
  • Publication records on database system, database management, or relevant disciplines
  • Experience of Web service deployment and development under Windows/Linux
  • Ability and experience of applying open source software (Apache tomcat, Mysql, Lucene, Spark etc.)
  • Internal and international collaboration experience in academia/industry on database technology
Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required.
Application
A complete application should include:
  • Cover letter including a brief (approximately 2 pages) description of your research interests in relation to the research area mentioned above and how your expertise would contribute.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV), including a complete list of scientific publications.
  • Copies of at most five relevant scientific publications, numbered according to the publication list
  • A copy of your Ph D Thesis
  • Copies of relevant degree certificates and other documentation you wish to include in support of your application.
  • Names and contact details, including e-mail addresses, of at least three reference persons.
  • Other information relevant for the position, such as documentation and description of experiences from software development and work in or with industry

PhD fellows in Analytical Chemistry and Signal Processing, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering two PhD scholarships in Analytical Chemistry and Signal Processing commencing 01.05.2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The two projects are part of a 4-year Innovation Foundation project with five partner organizations:  University of Copenhagen (PLEN and DIKU), Eurofins Miljø A/S, Seacon A/S, and KMC Nordhavn. The PhD projects will be performed in collaboration with researchers at RAACE (Research Center for Advanced Analytical Chemistry) at University of Copenhagen. RAACE comprises all modern equipment for Sample preparation and extraction e.g. Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE) and online Solid Phase Extraction (SPE). Analytical platforms at RAACE include chromatography, mass spectrometry, ultra-high-pressure-liquid chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and comprehensive multi-dimensional gas and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection.

Project description
Unlike targeted analysis, untargeted fingerprinting analysis is still in its infancy. In untargeted fingerprinting analysis, compounds are not specified a priori and the analytical protocols are designed to cover as wide a range of chemical contaminants as possible. It requires a deep integration of chemistry, signal processing and data analysis and further development is required in all of these areas to take into account the specificities of the analytical instrumentation.

The objective of the two PhD projects is to develop and validate an analytical platform for untargeted contaminant fingerprinting of soil and sediment samples.

The projects will be divided into three main parts:

  1. Development and validation of sample handling and sample preparation protocols for untargeted fingerprinting analysis using supercritical fluid chromatography and online-solid phase extraction to fractionate samples.
  2. Development of protocols for untargeted fingerprinting analysis of contaminants using analytical platforms with higher peak capacity such as 2D gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection (3D separation method; GC×GC-MS); liquid chromatography with ion-mobility separation and mass spectrometry detection (LC-IM-MS), LC with dual detection:  ICP (inductive coupled plasma)-MS for detection of the elemental composition and ESI (electrospray ionization)-MS for detection of molecular mass.
  3. Development of signal processing procedures specific to these methods and application of pattern recognition techniques from chemometrics and machine learning to extract relevant chemical fingerprints of contaminants to be used for spatial interpolation.
The two PhD students will work together on all three parts of the project. However, PhD1 will focus on element fingerprinting analysis using LC-ICP/ESI-MS whereas PhD2 will focus on 3D separation methods of organic contaminants applying GC×GC-MS and LC-IM-MS.

Principal supervisor is Professor, Jan H Christensen, RAACE, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, E-mail: jch@plen.ku.dk, Direct Phone: +45 35332456. The projects are made in collaboration with Eurofins Miljø A/S.

Job description

  • To manage and carry through your research project
  • Attend PhD courses
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad

Formal requirements
The position is available for a 3-year period for applicants holding a relevant master’s degree or for a 4-year period for applicants who are already enrolled or are accepted to be enrolled at one of the Faculty’s master’s programmes.  At the time of commencement, applicants for the 4-year period must have approximately one year of study remaining before graduating from their MSc programme. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.
