Research Associate/Fellow in Machine Learning, University of Sheffield (3 years, £28,847 – £46,414/month)

Introduction

Dear all ,
We have an opening for a 3-year position of Research Associate or Research Fellow in Machine Learning with applications to Machine Translation and Multimodal Language Processing. This position is funded by the ERC MultiMT project: Multi-modal Context Modelling for Machine Translation, led by Prof. Lucia Specia (www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/~lucia) at the University of Sheffield.

Field/Goal/Objectives

This is a highly interdisciplinary project involving Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision and Machine Learning. Its goal is to devise methods and algorithms to exploit global multi-modal information for context modelling in Machine Translation. The post holder will be expected to investigate new ways to acquire multilingual multi-modal representations, and new machine learning and inference algorithms that can learn from these rich context models to generate high quality translations. In addition, if appointed as Research Fellow, the post holder will be expected to make significant contributions to multi-modal language processing in general, drawing from their experience in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing.

This is an opportunity to work in a well-connected international team with world-leading reputation in the Natural Language Processing (NLP) research group at the University of Sheffield. The NLP group is well known internationally for its research, and is one of the largest research groups in the area in Europe.

Postdoctoral Scientist (f/m) in the field of Physics or Chemistry, Germany

The institute Institute for Nanospectroscopy is looking for:

Postdoctoral Scientist (f/m) in the field of Physics or Chemistry

Reference No.: EM 2016/17

The institute for Nanospectroscopy offers an interdisciplinary research program for the design and optimization of energy-related materials applying synchrotron-based spectromicroscopic and synchrotron- and lab-based spectroscopic characterization methods. Materials research includes in particular nanoparticle and hybrid materials for applications such as photovoltaics, catalysis, thermoelectrics, batteries, and hydrogen storage.

Tasks

We are looking for a highly motivated young scientist in the field of very high frequency/ high field Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). The major aim of the project is to apply and further develop an existing FD-FT THz-EPR set-up and realize an in operando electro chemical cell that can be operated in the probe of the 263 GHz spectrometer in our lab. Main scientific targets are the extraction of spin coupling parameters, in particular zero field splittings, to study magneto structural correlations in catalytically active high spin transition metal ions. The candidate will be involved in user service at the THz-EPR station of BESSY II and work with master and PhD students.

Our EPR lab is equipped with modern EPR spectrometers covering the frequency range from 9 to 263 GHz capable of the complete repertoire of CW/pulsed EPR and a unique synchrotron based very broad band (150 GHz to several THz) frequency domain EPR spectrometers.

Requirements

Applicants should have or be close to finishing a PhD in physics or chemistry. The project requires relevant knowledge in magnetic resonance spectroscopy and instrumentation, preferably in EPR. Experience in inorganic and/or electro chemistry as well as quantum chemical calculations of EPR parameters are beneficial.

What we offer

Fixed term contract for 12 months. The employment contract is based on contracts for the German civil service (TVöD-Bund). We particularly welcome applications from women. Preference will be given to handicapped applicants provided equal suitability.

How to apply

Have we sparked your interest? Then we look forward to receiving your application by 05.08.2016.

PhD Student (f/m) (Master/Diploma in Physics), Germany

The department Quantum Phenomena in Novel Materials is looking for:

PhD Student (f/m) (Master/Diploma in Physics)

Reference No.: EM 2016/6

The Department of Quantum Phenomena in Novel Materials undertakes world leading research in quantum and frustrated magnetism, multifunctional materials and superconductivity. As well as operating several X-ray and neutron instruments it also offers a state-of-the-art materials synthesis program and the full range of standard sample characterization facilities including X-ray Laue and powder diffraction, magnetization, specific heat and transport measurements.

Topic of the doctoral thesis:
"Investigations of Topological and Quantum Magnets"

The PhD student will investigate topological and quantum magnets with particular focus on frustrated and low dimensional magnetism where current research has revealed exotic phases such as classical and quantum spin ice which exhibit monopole excitations, new forms of topological order and fractional excitations. These phenomena will be investigated using primarily the experimental techniques of neutron and X-ray scattering along with materials synthesis and characterization. Pressure and magnetic field will be used to tune the ground states and provide additional insight, while deeper understanding will also be gained by performing computer simulations and by collaboration with theorists.

Applicants should have or be close to finishing a master/diploma degree in physics and should have taken courses in condensed matter physics.

Please enclose with your application the following documents:
Motivation letter, CV and the contact details of at least two academic references.

ABOUT INRIA:
  • Inria is the biggest European public research institute dedicated to computer science. The PANAMA team (https://team.inria.fr/panama/) and the MULTISPEECH team (https://team.inria.fr/multispeech/) each gather 20+ scientists with a focus on machine learning and signal processing for music, speech, and general audio.
RESEARCH TOPIC:
  • Despite numerous studies on automatic music transcription and  composition, the temporal structure of music pieces at various time scales remains difficult to model. Automatic music improvisation systems such as OMax [1] and ImproteK [2] assume that the structure is either predetermined (chord chart) or completely free, which limits their use to specific musical styles. The concepts of semiotic structure [3] and Contrast & System [4] we recently introduced helped defining musical structure in a more general way. Yet, they do not easily translate into a computational model due to the large temporal horizon required and to the semantic gap with the observed musical signal or score. In the last few years, deep learning [5] has emerged as the new state of the art in the field of natural language processing (NLP) and it has already demonstrated its potential for modeling short-term musical structure [6, 7].
  • The goal of this PhD is to exploit and adapt deep recurrent neural networks (RNNs) for modeling medium- and long-term musical structure. This involves the following tasks in particular:
  1. designing new RNN architectures for jointly modeling music at several time scales: tatum, beat, bar, structural block (e.g., chorus or verse), whole piece,
  2. training them on smaller amounts of data than in the field of NLP,
  3. evaluating their performance for musical structure estimation and automatic music improvisation.
  • This position is part of a funded project with Ircam, in which the successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage.
PROFILE/ELIGIBILITY:
  • MSc in computer science, machine learning, or a related field.
  • Programming experience in Python or C/C++.
  • Previous experience with music and deep learning is not required but would be an asset.
