PhD studentship - multi-state & clinical predictive modelling - University of Manchester


Introduction


The University of Manchester has a fully-funded PhD studentship available (UK/EU students only) in multi-state models for patients on renal replacement therapy. 

Existing clinical prediction models are generally based on a single outcome or decision point. For example, the future risk of cardiovascular events or the death during a surgical procedure. However, in many situations we are faced with a complex sequence of events and decisions that we would like to predict multiple outcomes and hence optimize treatment. One such example is renal replacement therapy. Patients with kidney failure are faced with many treatment options (including transplant and dialysis) and may move between different treatments over time. This can be characterized by a multi-state model. The project aims to progress statistical methodology for clinical prediction in patients on renal replacement therapy with multi-state models, with the ultimate goal of informing optimal treatment. 

Scholarship Value

This fully-funded EPSRC 4-year project provides full support for tuition fees, conference/travel allowance and annual minimum tax-free stipend at UK Research Council rates (£14, 296 from 2016/17). Due to commence October 2016, the project is open to UK/EU nationals only due to the nature of the funding. 

Study Focus

The successful candidate will be trained in a wide range of interdisciplinary research techniques including biostatistical modelling, healthcare treatments and epidemiology. There will also be opportunities for external training in prognostic modelling at Oxford University. 

Objectives of the Project
  1. Review literature of CPMs and multi-state modelling to identify the potential to apply CPMs in a multi-state framework. 
  2. Develop a multi-state model to describe the flows of patients through treatments in RRT, using data from the UK Renal Registry, which contains data on all patients in the UK on RRT. 
  3. Use the developed multi-state model to define aetiological drivers of outcomes in patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT) 
  4. Use the developed multi-state model, combined with CPM methodology, to derive a ‘decision aid’ for optimising treatment for RRT patients. 
  5. Externally validate the developed decision aid/CPM on international renal registries (e.g. Australia/New Zealand, Sweden). 
This project requires the use, and development, of statistical methodology in survival analysis, multi-state modelling, causal inference, and clinical predictive modelling. The student will also be exposed to methods for handling, processing and cleaning a large dataset (UK renal registry). 

Expect outcomes/impact of the project


  • Provide a unique insight into the current ‘journey’ of RRT patients through multi-state modelling. 
  • Provide a tool which can be used to optimise dynamic treatment regimens for these complex patients to improve prognosis. 
  • Statistical methodology, particularly around the link between predictive modelling and decision support, that will see wider impact in other disease and application areas. 
Illegibility
  • Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) a minimum upper-second honours degree (or equivalent) in a related area to the proposed research. 
  • A Masters degree and/or previous research experience in related techniques would be beneficial.

170 Master’s Scholarship - Université Paris-Saclay, France

170 scholarships will be awarded for the 2016-2017 academic year for one year to M1 or M2-level students.
The Université Paris-Saclay would like to promote access to its master’s (nationally-certified degree) programs to international students, taught in its member establishments, and to make it easier for highly-qualified foreign students to attend its University especially those wishing to develop an academic project through research up to the doctoral level.

  • Beneficiaries: Students enrolled in a master’s program at Université Paris-Saclay who satisfy criteria of academic excellence.

We are looking for someone with advanced training in computer science, machine learning or an equivalent field whose skills span the complete project cycle, from data wrangling, to modeling to feature implementation and monitoring.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understand the business problem, identify the key challenges, formulate the machine learning problem and provide/prototype solutions
  • Be able to debug and correct your assumptions through AB testing
  • Document the technical details of your work
  • Collaborate and brainstorm with other team members
  • Guide and mentor junior data scientists in best practices regarding methodology (prototype formulation and hypothesis testing), as well as implementation
  • Assess the methodological and functional pros and cons of implementing third-party products versus building an in-house system when facing a business problem.
  • Collaborate extensively with stakeholders, program management, and software development team members to ensure that solutions meet business needs, permit valid inferences, and have functional feasibility.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong communication skills both written and oral
  • Master’s degree or PhD in machine learning, computer science or equivalent work experience
  • Strong programming skills, proficiency with one of low level languages such as c++/java, and one scripting language such as python/R/scala
  • Experiences with distributed computing (Hadoop/Spark)
  • 3-5 years’ experience of working with real data (data cleaning, data visualization and modeling)
  • Strong hands-on skills in sourcing, cleaning, manipulating and analyzing large volumes of data
  • Excellent academic or industrial track record of proposing, conducting and reporting results of original research, plus collaborative research with publications

About Australia Awards Scholarships

Awardees at an Australia Awards Leadership Conference in Canberra, AustraliaAustralia Awards Scholarships are long term development awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
They aim to contribute to the long term development needs of Australia's partner countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements.
They provide opportunities for people from developing countries, particularly those countries located in the Indo-Pacific region, to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.
The study and research opportunities provided by Australia Awards Scholarships develop skills and knowledge of individuals to drive change and contribute to the development outcomes of their own country.

Awards benefits

The Awards are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training. The following benefits generally apply:
  • Full tuition fees
  • Return air travel—payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
  • Establishment allowance—a once only payment of A$5,000 as a contribution towards accommodation expenses, text books, study materials
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) – is a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by the department. From 1 January 2013, CLE payable to awardees is A$30,000 per year.

Award conditions

Applicants who want to accept an Australia Awards Scholarship will need to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia declaring that they will comply with the conditions of the scholarship.
Awardees are required to leave Australia for a minimum of two years after completing their scholarship. Failure to do so will result in the awardee incurring a debt for the total accrued cost of their scholarship.

The top Australia Award Scholarship recipients from Indonesia and PNG may also be eligible to receive an Allison Sudradjat Prize.

Hadi Soesastro Prize

The prize offers study assistance of up to $25,000 for one male and one female Australia Awards Scholarship recipient.
Recipients from Indonesia who are undertaking high level research and skill development at an Australian University are eligible to receive a Hadi Soesastro Prize.

      We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated student willing to work on a research project entitled “Large Scale Antenna Systems Made Practical: Advanced Signal Processing for Compact Deployments [LSAS-SP]” sponsored by UK research council, Bell-Labs, NJ, USA and QinetiQ, UK.       JWS2016/16 Smart Interfaces for Converged Wireless and Optical Networks

      For the end-to-end design and performance evaluation of converged wireless and optical networks, methods for seamless physical interconnection of a variety of technologies are indispensable. This project aims to design novel agile, programmable, and scalable interfaces interconnecting different wireless and optical technologies at the transport layer.

      JWS2016/17 Analysis of Raman spectra using hyperspectral imaging methods

      Raman spectroscopy is a powerful technique for light/matter interaction analysis which can be used in chemistry to detect, identify and quantify specific molecules. Although produced by different acquisition systems, Raman spectra and reflectance spectra recorded by passive hyperspectral sensors for remote sensing applications (e.g., earth and space observation) present many similarities. The aim of this project is to develop new computational tools for Raman spectroscopy, inspired by models and methods dedicated to hyperspectral image analysis (e.g., classification, source separation, non-stationary processes).

      JWS2016/18 RF signal processing for the networked battlespace

      In this project you will research new algorithms and sensors for RF signal detection in hostile environments from a network of mixed quality sensors. You will particularly focus on the signal processing algorithms to detect, identify and locate the source of various RF signals in difficult environments with high levels of background noise and strong fading channels.

      JWS2016/19 Compressive Sensing for Interferometry: new imaging techniques for transformational science

      The transformational science envisaged for the next decades in astronomy requires that future telescopes, such as the flagship Square Kilometer Array (SKA), achieve unprecedented dynamic ranges and angular resolutions on wide frequency bands. In this context, interferometric imaging techniques literally and urgently need to be re-invented. The project will leverage the theory of compressive sampling to help defining new sensing and reconstruction approaches for ultra-high resolution wide-band imaging. Fast reconstruction algorithms capable of handling Big Data will be studied and adapted to multi-core computing architectures.

      Development, evaluation and comparison of algorithms for LiDAR and Radar automotive sensing in bad weather.

      Project Description
      Optical sensors perform poorly in fog, rain and snow, but new developments in, for example, full waveform processing of LiDAR developed at HWU may extend the instrumental capability in poor weather. Similarly, 3D mapping (stereo, optical flow) and scene interpretation from video data is adversely affected when the target signature and any subsequent feature vector is degraded. Radar and THz imaging perform well in adverse conditions, but have lower frame rates and poorer resolution.
      This is an opportunity for a new PhD student to join a newly formed collaborative project between the Universities of Heriot-Watt, Birmingham and Edinburgh, and Jaguar Land Rover to develop, compare and contrast new approaches to 3D scene building and object (e.g. pedestrians, vehicles, termed ‘actors’) identification in adverse weather, unlike the vast majority of current autonomous and assisted vehicle sensing projects that use benchmark data sets and scenarios in favourable conditions. The student will work with a fully equipped test vehicle or vehicles, with video, LiDAR and low THZ Radar sensors, as well as the usual GPS and road mapping data.
      We will consider students with a good undergraduate or postgraduate background in Electrical or Software Engineering, or Physics, although an ability to develop, implement and evaluate algorithms and conduct experiments is essential.

      Heriot-Watt’s Institutes of Signals, Sensors and Systems, and Photonics and Quantum Sciences offer a thriving environment for PhD research, with over 100 active academics and researchers in each institute.
